Abstract

The authors reflect upon an international research experience accompanying their doctoral advisor to conduct social scientific research in a private university in Brazil. They consider how this experience informed their graduate education and offer advice for future student/faculty international research and global exchange partnerships. In order to fully maximize the learning and benefits of international field research, the authors advocate for graduate students to see themselves not only as data gatherers, but also as cultural ambassadors and global learners. By providing a graduate students’ perspective on global exchanges, they seek to enhance the design of future international research partnerships and also to deepen their own learning about the lasting impact of their experience.
