Author Biography

Michael Howarth, Missouri Southern State University

Dr. Michael Howarth received his B.A. from James Madison University where he double-majored in English and Secondary Education with a minor in Film Studies. He received his M.F.A. in Creative Writing Fiction from the University of Alaska at Anchorage, and he received his Ph.D. in Literary and Cultural Studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His primary teaching areas include children's literature, young adult literature, film studies, American literature to 1900, creative writing, and 19th-century British literature. He directs the Honors Program at Missouri Southern State University where he is a Professor of English. He is on the editorial board for Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy.

He is the author of two critical texts, Under the Bed Creeping, Psychoanalyzing the Gothic in Children's Literature and Movies to See before You Graduate from High School, as well as the young adult novel Fair Weather Ninjas. His newest novel, a gothic historical thriller titled A Still and Awful Red was published in 2021.
